What to know about malaria?

Malaria is a serious disease that spreads when you’re bitten by a mosquito infected by parasites. When it bites, the mosquito injects malaria parasites into your bloodstream. Malaria is potentially life-threatening if it is not immediately treated.

This is why awareness and precaution, especially before traveling to an area endemic for malaria, are important to prevent the disease and minimise chances of getting infected.

In our Expert Tips series, Professor Thomas Lescot, Europ Assistance’s Chief Medical Officer, answers your questions to help you take the right steps to protect yourself against malaria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmlUjyyMPp8

HOW CAN I RECOGNIZE & PREVENT MALARIA?

Signs and symptoms of malaria are similar to flu symptoms and emerge 10 days to 1 month after an individual is bitten by an infected mosquito. They include fever, shaking chills, headache, muscle aches, and tiredness. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur.

Be aware that symptoms could appear after a year and this needs to be considered while diagnosing and treating malaria.

The best prevention is to reduce your chances of getting bitten by mosquitoes. You can also temporarily take an antimalarial drug when travelling in high-risk areas.
